Perimeter offices insulate
new Rediffusion HK studios
THE requirements of a television studio are in effect the same as those for a modern flow-line factory. Writ- ing, filming and editing are all com- ponent parts of the end product - the domestic programme - and the layout of the studio must ensure that assem- bly of the programme proceeds effi- ciently with a smooth interelationship of the various departments.
The comparison with a factory lay- out is valid, but there are of course further complexities to be dealt with, such as the need to pay the strictest attention to acoustics, air-conditioning, level floors for trolley tracking, and the circulation boundaries for public audiences which must not overflow into the production areas.

against external noise was a governing factor in the design of the new Kow- loon television studios of Rediffusion Hong Kong Ltd.
When RTV laid plans for a televi- sion station to cope with its expand- ing audience and the new emphasis being placed on transmitting live shows as opposed to recorded pro- ductions, it was offered a site within the Government-designated radio en- tertainments area north of Kowloon City. overlooking the low-cost housing and resettlement estates of Choi Hung with Hong Kong and Kowloon to the south. It is close to the entrance of the Sha- tin road tunnel and is within the flight path of Kai Tak airport.
The architect was asked to create a building as large as permitted by the Building Ordinance and containing at least 15,000 sq. ft. of television studio. This resulted in a five-storey building with 100,000 sq. ft. of space, of which 15,000 sq. ft. is television studio and 3,500 sq. ft. is audio studio.
