Container terminal
project under way
WITH comparatively little fanfare for such an extensive project, work was started early this year on one of Hong Kong's most ambitious civil engineer- ing schemes the construction of the Kwai Chung shipping terminal which is designed for a major containerisation complex on the Kowloon peninsula.
The terminal is composed of three quay structures in its 3,000 ft. of length, each approximately 1,000 ft. and capable of withstanding storm conditions. The location is in Gin Drinkers Bay, near the town of Kwai Chung in the New Territories, where the old sea wall is being built over and a large section of the inlet reclaimed.

A dual benefit of the scheme is that the excavated borrow areas will be left in readiness for building de- velopment.
Capital investment in each berth ranges between HK$96 million and HK$150 million. The companies in- volved are:

Dredging
The work entails dredging nearly 4 million cu.yd. of marine mud, 30 to 40 ft. in depth, and dumping it 5 miles out to sea. Reclamation up to a 75 ft. total depth will require almost 81⁄2 mil- lion cu.yds. of decomposed granite fill. Concreting will be used in association with piling and the deck structure.
Berth No. 1 is due for completion by August 1972 when the first con- tainer ship is scheduled to arrive. The completion date for the whole project is early 1973.
Dredging and marine works on Berth No. 1 are being carried out by the French contractor, Dragages, who have much experience in marine works and have employed the dredge, Hai- phong, which was formerly used at the
Kwai Chung terminal site. Berths will extend out to the dredge on the left of the picture. The bay on the right will eventually be reclaimed.
