Plover Cove reservoir scheme. This bucket type unit is producing 10 to 12,000 cu.yds. of mud per day, work- ing two 10 hour shifts. For berths 2 and 3 Nishimatsu will be using a 15 cu.yd., grab dredger.

Quarrying and spreading

Assisted by low rainfall this year (15 mm instead of the average 200 mm) contractor and sub-contractors have been able continuously to quarry for rock and decomposed granite at the rate of almost 10,000 cu.yd. per day.

Gammons (HK) Ltd., are handling the road works for the first stage and are using mainly Cat 977 crawler loaders supplying 120 tip trucks. Hauls vary around 2 miles one way. Each truck carries about 3.85 cu.yd. per load, allowing for 30 per cent bulking of the material.

To enable quick, efficient loading of barges (which spread the material), two temporary steel jetties are being erected upon steel columns and con- crete blocks. These have two ramps each 40 ft. apart, allowing two trucks to dump fill material simultaneously into the 220 ft. long barges of 1,500 ton capacity. sidesheets to allow rapid discharge and with caps then withdrawing each avoid possible arching.

Piling

In Berth No. 1 Dragages are using composite steel box piles with steel plate stiffeners for the retaining walls and seaward crane rail, with 20 in. diameter Colcrete piles under the land- ward crane rail. The latter emplace- ment consists of driving steel casings

casing as concrete is filled in.

In Berths 2 and 3 Nishimatsu will be using tubular steel piles to support the reinforced concrete deck and sloping rubble walls to retain the fill material.

Apart from the necessary admini- stration buildings and container yards a total of up to 12 container cranes will be installed on the three berths.
