The structure includes an 8,000 sq. ft. ground floor area and a 6.000 sq. ft. mezzanine level. The roof is framed

with post-tensioned beams 10 ft. on centre, with a clear span of 76 ft. and cantilevers of 8 ft. on each end.

The post-tensioned beams frame into reinforced concrete girders 8 ft. deep by 28 in. wide, with clear spans of 76 ft., and with 21 ft. cantilevers on each end. The use of the long- span post-tensioned roof beams thus provided large column-free areas, per- mitting complete freedom of interior layout and design.

The exterior of this 25-storey building is formed of precast concrete panels which feature white quartz. vertine was also precast on panels as a veneer.

The panels, which measure 5 ft. by 14 ft., with the fins projecting 18 in. for sun control, were pre-glazed and delivered to the site for erection,

The 388 ft. tall tower is 84 ft. by 124 ft. Its struc- tural frame is supported on 12 columns spaced 40 ft. on

centre.

The jury commented. "A particularly appropriate use of precast concrete. Rapid and economical building en- closure was accomplished by the design of sculptured panels of precast concrete

The Century Building; Seattle, Washington Bystrom and Greco, architects Anderson-Bjornstad-Kane, engineers

The four-storey office building with connected park- ing facility employs both post-tensioned and pretensioned concrete. It houses a bank on the first oor and offices above, and is located on a 120 ft. by 119 ft. site near downtown Seattle. The building has endured a moderately severe earthquake without exhibiting any damage.

Sun control is achieved without obstruction of the

view.

The architect stated, "The construction method has provided a fireproof structure for the owner well within his budget. A distinct economic advantage was revealed when compared to other systems, and particularly where fire protection was necessarily provided by a ceiling.

The structure consists of three

storeys and a basement, with the third-floor reinforced concrete flat plate slab ingeniously suspended from the prestressed roof system. The roof is framed with a clear-span, two-way waffle-type system with a 4 in. slab, employing post-tensioned concrete beams at 9 ft. 4 in. centres which span 93 ft. 4 in. in one direction and 79 ft. 4 in. in the other. The beams are 4 ft. in depth, with widths varying from 8 in. to 12 in.

The third-floor slab is suspended from the prestressed roof system with 24 in. diameter high-strength steel hangers at alternate beams, 18 ft. 8 in.

Use of a prestressed concrete waffle system was selected by the architects to provide for maximum column spac- ing, and to accommodate a variety of educational spaces, with maximum flexibility.

The architects stated, "Concrete per- mitted the expression of an exposed structural system that relates visually with the suspended ceiling, used for mechanical distribution.”
