Vide (b) of explanatory note under p. 51 note (12) above. One Messenger has also been provided for the Deputy Superintendent of Police (Reserve) and the office enlarged, resulting in an increase of $720 per annum in rent.

Allowances of $3, $3, and $5 per mensem have been granted to 1 Engine Driver, 1 Blacksmith, and 1 Fireman respectively, under the Fire Brigade, for qualifying as efficient to drive the land steamer and motor tender.

One new Probationer Nurse has been added to the Staff of the Medical Department.

A European female attendant has been provided for the Lunatic Asylum to attend to the female patients.

1 extra Midwife with House Allowance is now provided for Cheung Chau Island.

The Chinese Public Dispensaries Hospitals are now being utilized as Maternity Hospitals, and a Travelling Allowance has been provided in order to allow of their super- vision by a qualified European Lady Probationer.

The following additions have been necessary in the Bacteriological Staff of the Medical Department, owing to the measures now being taken to prevent the spread of cerebro-spinal fever :-

1 4th Grade Laboratory Assistant.

1 Laboratory Attendant.

2 Grooms.

Owing to the general growth of the Colony and the increase in the number of New Houses in Health Districts, the following additions to the Sanitary Board Staff have been made:-

--

3 Coolies for the cleansing gang in Health Districts 8, 9, and 10.

2 New Bullock Drivers for Kowloon.

1 Assistant Scavenging Foreman for Hongkong.

15 Scavenging Coolies for Hongkong.

6 Scavenging Coolies for Kowloon.

1 new Foreman is required for forestry work in the New Territories.

The salary of the present Headmistress of the Peak School has been raised on account of long service and the increased attendance at the school. It is no longer possible to provide the Headmistress with quarters in the school and a House Allowance of $600 has therefore been inserted.

Increased attendance at the Peak School has necessitated the addition of one Assistant Mistress with House Allowance.

The addition of one Student Teacher, Supernumerary, has been considered neces- sary to assist in the teaching of English at the Saiyingpun English School.

In order to deal with the increase of work, and to maintain an efficient Clerical Staff in the Public Works Department, one 2nd Grade Draughtsman has been added to the General Staff and the following changes have been made in the Crown Lands and Survey Office :-

2 Junior Assistant Land Surveyors, 1 3rd Grade Draughtsman, and 1 2nd Grade

Tracer have been added,

1 4th Grade Clerk and 1 4th Grade Draughtsman have been promoted to 3rd

and 2nd Grade respectively.

1 5th Grade Clerk has also been added in the Accounts, Correspondence, and Stores Office of the Public Works Department and 1 3rd Grade Surveyor to the Public Health and Buildings Ordinance Office.

À 6th Grade Shroff has been added in the Post Office to assist the Compradore whose duties have been continually increasing.
