Decline In British Yards
FOREIGN INCREASE Quarterly returns of Lloyd's Re- rister show that at the end of March there were 239 merchant vessels of 1,089,077 tons under con- struction in Great Britain and Ire- land. This amount was less by 36,349 tons than that which was being built at the end of Decem ber, but was more by 74,623 tons than the shipping under construc- flon a year ago.
The quarterly returns for Decem ber 31 had shown a reduction of 52,209 tona

The total shipping under con- struction in the world amounts to 2,894,596 tons, of which 37.6 "per cent, is being built in Great Bri- |tain and Ireland and 62.4 per cent. abroad. The quarterly total for the world is less by 5,488 tons than the amount being built at the end of December, but it was still more than any recorded from June, 1930, to June, 1937.
FEWER VESSELS, BEGUN In Great Britain and Treland work was started on 173,031 tons during the last three months, a decrease of 44,488 tons compared with the previous quarter. There were launched 179,992 tons, a de- : ercase of 43,504 tons, so that the shipping launched was not quite replaced by new construction.
Abroad work was begun on 434,- 901 tons,, a decrease of 61,252 tons. and there were launched. ' 446,342 tons, a reduction of 104,191 tons. On March 31 there were being built throughout the world, 105 steam and motor oil tankers of 685,167 tons, reckoning vessels of The Butterfield and Swire's 8.1,000 tons gross and upwards. Of Philoctetes is expected to arrive in these 31 vessels of 244,657 tons Hong Kong from Singapore on were being built in Great Britain April 28 at 1 pm.
