Archibald Macaulay, bought earlier on as inside-right from Glasgow Rangers, for the bly- gest sum of money West Ham ever paid, recently played for the first time at centre-forward. His predecessor in the position was Foxall, previously his part- ner at outside-right

The theory may be that everything is worth trying

once. Macaulay was given the job because he scored six goals for the London Combination side:

West Ham, it is asserted, would probably be challenging the leaders of their diviklan if they had obtained a really first-class centre-forward early in the season. It is suggested that the club have missed their best chance for years in a rather mysterious fashion. They have shown no particular reluctance to pay for team- building in other positions.
