Even at the age of eleven Waddell looked like one of those born footballers He missed his schools Internation- al cap because the selectors thought he was too small. He captained his team to the final of the Scottish schoolboy cup? West Ham United "did not. join in this rush of buying and selling.

Archibald Macaulay, bought earlier on as inside-right from Glasgow Rangers, for the bly- gest sum of money West Ham ever paid, recently played for the first time at centre-forward. His predecessor in the position was Foxall, previously his part- ner at outside-right
The theory may be that everything is worth trying
once. Macaulay was given the job because he scored six goals for the London Combination side:
West Ham, it is asserted, would probably be challenging the leaders of their diviklan if they had obtained a really first-class centre-forward early in the season. It is suggested that the club have missed their best chance for years in a rather mysterious fashion. They have shown no particular reluctance to pay for team- building in other positions.
