This belief was rudely shocked seven years ago when we found that a Bank of England five pound note, which had been hitherto as good as five gold sovereigns in any part of the world. had fallen in value in the estimation of Our foreign creditors by about 40 per cent, and as they had the right to take payment in gold we went off gold, and in so doing paid our foreign creditors 60 per cent of what we owed them.

We, being on balance a creditor nation, lost much more than we gained by going of gold. But that was the cost at which we got round an immediate emergeney,

I am telling this story merely to show how easily our present coins could be fitted into Bombay the cent and dollár system. as they are so fitted already in this colony, which has more than half the area of England.

Building upward from the cent we would arrive at the pound. We can never get away from gold as an ultimate measure of interna- tional value, because it is the only standard universally recognised by the greatest trading nations.

When we get to the pound we find
