SIR ABE BAILEY
Appeals For Help For China
The famous South Afilcan financier, Sir Abe Bailey, has writ- ten a letter to the "Times" recall- ing the National fund which the Lord Mayor of London opened to relieve the sufferers of the 1924 Tokio earthquake and the huri- dreds of thousands of pounds Bent to Japan.from Great Britain asa result.
Pointing out the present urgent need of medical equipment In Chi- nese cities, where "thousands of Chinese civilians are being torn to pleces by Japanese bombs and, shells," Sir Abe (whose legs were recently amputated) says: "The news comes with terrible polg- pancy to an invalid who received every attention. Isn't this an oc casion when the British common- wealth should come to the aid of sufferers in Chiria at least to the same extent as she came to the air of the Japanese in 1924 and under the same traditional leader- ship?"
Suggesting that the ald in this case should be rushed to Chinese. ports in the form of anaesthetics and medical stores. Arst by air and then by a fully equipped Red Cross British ship loaded with medical equipment and surgeons, Sir Abe offers to contribute £1,000 to start such a fund.—
