COASTAL BLOCKADE

BRITAIN STIPULATES CONDITIONS

Tokyo. Sept. 21: The, Japanese Government have agreed to the conditions stipulated by Britain under which Britain has agreed to the stopping of British shipping on the China coast for the purpose of verifying certificates of registry. It is learned on good authority that Britain had declared she considered the whole procedure illegal but did not propose to stand on legal rights subject to the follow-

ing conditions:-

Firstly, if British warship is in vicinity of a mile the Japanese warship must ask permission before inspecting British merchantmen and, secondly, if not the Japanese warship most immediately report such inspection which must be limited to verifica- tion of the certificate of registry. · Britain has retained the right to claim compensation for loss or damage sustained by Japanese

While severe fighting was going on in Lotien, the Japanese launch- ed a heavy attack on Lanhong but here again a major victory was claimed by the defenders.
