BATTLESHIPS

Not Likely Targets From Air

SIR SAMUEL HOARE'S VIEW

Sir Samuel Hoare, Home Secre tary, in a talk to boys at the Public Schools' aviation camp at Mousehold Aerodrome. Norwich. said that the equipment of the Defence Services and the organis- ation for producing armament on a large scale were so highly em- clent to-day that. It was most unlikely that and country would consider involving itself in a war against 118.

i

He referred to the comparative suddeness with which submarines and aircraft were introduced as effective weapons of attack, and Į spoke of the rapid progess made

recent year

defensive measures,

in

Instancing the improved arma- ment or battlehlpa, Sir Samuel said the development of guns able to sustain concentrated anti-aircraft fre was such that a massed dive on a battleship would probably result in

least ten ehemy aircraft being brought down. It seemed likely that in the future : attackers would not consider bat- tleships a worthwhile target, but would concentrate on more stra- tegic objects where there was less risk of loss to the attackers.

Sir Samuel described the latest developments in the defence of the civil population against gag” and Incendiary bombs by the distribu- tion of gan musks to all sections of the population from babyhood to old age.
