DAVILA, Pasuquin, Ilocos Norte, April 22-An amicable settlement of the strike at the Grufus Man- ganese Mining Company is being made, and it is hoped that the dif- ferences between labourers and officials will soon be settled.

week ago a general walkout was staged by all of the labourers of the company, under the leadership of Tomas Pinsä.

who is said to be the president of the labour union of Ilocos Norte. These labourers had submitted & petition to the company, request In an increase in wages from P.60 to P1.00 a day for men, and from P.50 to P.70 a day for women. The présent scale is from P.50 to P.60 for men, and from P40 to P.50 for women. The petition ask ed for an 8-hour day, and asserted that labourers were working from 9 to 10 hours daily.

The labourers demanded the re- moval of the foreman, Thomas N. Cruz, on the grounds that he s too harsh and rude to the labour- era. Mr. Cruz has been unfair in his treatment of labourers, accord- ing to the petition.

A physician to care for the medical needs of the labourers is another of the demands of the strikers. Thé company should establish a company store, so that the labourers can buy thelf sup- piles without going to the nearest

town, which is at a considerable distance from the camp.

About 50 Labourers were brought from Manila to work in the port to load ore, it is reported. These labourers were unaware of the strike, but were willing to join the strikers if the union would pay their are back to Manila. This the union was unable to do.

There has been no disorder, and the labourers have promised to no back to work if their requests were granted. However, the area la being guarded by members of the Philippine Army, in order that there may be no disorder."
