ARCTIC ROUTE TO FAR EAST

Russia's Plan For Regular Shipping

STRATEGIC VALUE IN WAR TIME

Details of the Russian plan for establishing a regular shipping service during the summer months between the White Sea and the Far East by the Arctic route are. published in a German Admiralty journal, writes

a Home shipping correspondent.

The development of this route is making excellent progress, and zome 25,000,000 was included in the 1936 Soviet budget for tinuing the work

con-

The strategic importance of the new highway to the Far East is emphasised in the Russian Press. In the event of war in the Pacific. Russia would not have to depend entirely On the Trans-Siberian radway for the transport of muni- tions and supplies to her Far Eastern fraat.

The terminal ports are Archan-- gel, in the White Sea; and Vladi vostok, in the Pacific.

For several years, Russian mer- chant ships have been using the Arctic route, assisted by ice- breakers and aircraft, and during 1936 they transported over 20,000 tons of cargo and 400 passengers. By 1940. the Boviet Govern- ment's plan is carried out accord- ing to timetable. 44 ships with 2 cargo capacity of 352,000 tons will be, trading between the White Bea, the Polar lands, and the northernmost Siberian ports; three larger ships will be running re- gularly from Archangel-Murmansk to Vadivostok, and two others In the reverse direction.

A special service la to be main- tained between Murmansk and Petropavlovak, in Kamtchatka,

VALUE OF AIRCRAFT The unusual severity of ice con- ditions this year yielded valuable experience. It was found that the small aircraft carried on board the icebreakers for reconnottring were unsuited for 'the work; from now onwards powerful shore-" based aeroplanes are to be used for Ice reconnaissance.
