BAD CONDITIONS, FOR ASTRONOMERS
" (Special Air Mall Service:
London, Sept. 25." The Royal Observatory is troub- led by the pollution of the Green- wich atmosphere, but there is no likelihood of its moving to another site for some time.
1
The Astronomer Royal, Dr. H. Spencer Jones, told me to-day writes a conespondent, that smoke from twp generating stations affected the observatory at times: and hot air condensed on instru- ments. But smoke from domestic was more troublesome.
CLEAR SKIES
나
"My general Impression is that conditions are getting worse,”” he said, "but we want substantia proof of that before we think of moving."
Where would the observatory go? Dr. Spencer Jones says that much research would have to be made before another site could be selected,
The essential would be a clear
sky and the "second a "good dis.. tribution" of clear ky. A place with a clear sky all the summer "qad murky conditions in the win- ter would be useless.

Then there is the "quality of BANGALORF seeing." The brilliant night with all the stars twinkling is useless to the astronomer because the at- mosphere is disturbed.
The slle must offer the best com- promise of these qualities, and the Astronomer Royal does not know where he can find it at present.
The tme Instruments would pro- bably be left on the present site: 1,869 | "G.M.T” would be unaffected.
