GENEVA AWAITING THE ITALIAN REPLY

Proposals Rejected But Still Some Hope

ABYSSINIAN ARMIES RESTLESS

Italy has formally rejected the Geneva proposals, although It is felt that the way is still open for negotiations. "This decision is causing grave anxiety in the capitals of Europe. In the meantime the Committee of Five is awaiting the Italian re- ply before taking further action.

A strong rumour is afloat in Geneva that the King of Italy has written to King Georie appealing for a better understanding between Britain and Italy, but British quarters are not aware of such a move.

Meanwhile the Abysslatan armles are growing restless and the news of Italy's rejecilon of the proposals has only aggra. vated their impatience. Britain has no separate quarrel with Italy and talk of war between Italy and Britain is non- sense...

Both the Paris newspapers "Matin" and "Journal" expect that Italy will make counter-proposals, the former paper stating that it is necessary to await such proposals before regarding the negotiations as ended. On the other hand the authoritative Rome statement as- serts it is now for the Powers or the League to make fresh proposals in accordance with Italy's aspira- tions, and adds "there has been no? rupture,”___ Reuter.

Signor Mussolini's answer to the Committee of Five's pro- posals is, as expected, "a definite "no" according to the informal resolution passed by the Ministerial. Council on Saturday and contained in the official communique.

Tao issue in the present case, says the "News Chronicle" 10 A leading article, is not between Bri-the tala and Italy-a nation with whom the Government of this country has no conceivable quar- rel-but between Italy and the League. The threat of war which has arisen has been referred to the League and is under the League's adjudication and cannot be taken away from the League.

The head of the Governinent gave a comprehensive survey, of over an hour's duration of the political and military situation which has arisen in the last few days.
