On April 28 the Kinshui sluice was formally pronounced com- plete. An announcement made public by the Shanghal Office of the National Economic Council on that "This Saturday last. states completes the Kinshut reclamation project in Hupeh Province. Nearly two hundred and forty square miles of fertile ground. formerly under water for a part of each year, have been made available for agriculture.”

The Kinshu! Is a tributary of the Yangtze, running into that river about 20 miles above kow. It was formerly a of great danger since the Yangtze waters wherever the river was in food, swelled the Kinshui, thereby. inundating a large of the surrounding country..

In 1932 this situation attracted the attention of the National Gov- erment, and in the following year the National Economic Coun- cfl began large scale operations on plans drawn up in consultation with engineers of the League of Nations.

A stone and earth dam was bullt across the mouth of the Kin- shul. thus preventing the ingress of the Yangtze waters. To dispose of the water from the Kinshul a sluice tius been built that will allow the rainfall collected behind the dam in the summer months to be discharged safely into the Yangtze when the river is low during the winter. The sluice con- driven tains tarée big tunnels through a rocky hill through which the entire discharge of the Kin- shui river is conveyed.,
