SUPREME COURT BIL
DEBATE
Compromise Satisfies The Lord Chief Justice
London, Dec. 14. Rarely has a debate in the House of Lords been attended with such interest as when the House reas- sembled this afternoon for the pur- pose of discussing the Supreme
· Court Judienture Amendment Bill
The galleries were packed with members of the public, the legal profession, House of Commons members, and a large muster of legal Peers.
Lord Reading, opening the de- bate, said that Lord Hewart's al- legations were most disturbing, and, if unexplained would lead to the conclusion that the Lord Chief Justice bad been treated with lack of respect and courtesy through not being consulted as the per- manent head of the Justiciary.
Lord Reading declared that he could not fully appreciate why the Government had introduced the
new
method of appointment of the Vice-President of the Court of Appeal from the existing Lords of. Justice without regard to seniority, ucus. Instead of relying on the former
custom.
