HIS EXCELLENCY
After having declared the stone to have been well and truly laid, His Excellency the Governor said:-
Mr. Mackle. Your Excellency, Ladies and Gentlemen.- regard it a very great privilege to have Inid to-day the foundation stone "of the new Head Office of the Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank- ing Corporation. It is a privilege of which I could never have dreamed when I first became a humble depositor in the Bank near- Ly 37 year ago in Penang. 'I have been connected with the Bank in

I congratulate the Directors on their enterprise in building this new Head Office in Hong Kong. be no doubt that the stability and strength of the Bank have stood the test of a long period of time.

A FINE RECORD Since the Bank opened on the 1st January 1865 it has had a fine record. It la true that in the years 1874 and 1875 the trade position was bad and dividends were pass- ed but with the appointment of a new Chief manager, Sir Thomas Jackson, the position improved and since then the Corporation has been uniformly prosperous. Its history may be said to have been interwoven with that of the Colony and in a large measure with that. of the Far East One of my pre- decessors, Sir Arthur Kennedy, said in the year 1872 "The most flourish- ing Corporation in Hong Kong, the Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank- ing Corporation has acted liked a thermometer indicating the per-. lodic condition of the atmosphere of Hong Kong" That is still true to-day.
ון
In conclusion on behalf of all present I take the opportunity of this ceremony to-day to wish the Hong Kong and Shanghal Banking Corporation continued prosperity.

The sale of this feather is in-
creasing during the winter months owing to the drying of many ducks besides those used for immediate consumption. Dried duck is a win- ter delicacy, and every year people buy a good many dried ducks both for their own consumption and as presents. Instead of throwing the feathers into the dust bins, Chin ese cocks sell them to the "Junk" man at a price of a few cents-a catty.
