534'S SIREN

Deep Note's Range Over Ten Miles

The

London, Aug. 25. new Cunarder 534, which the Queen will launch and chris- ten at Clydeside next month, will have a siren that will ordinarily carry sound for ten miles.

Instead of being upright as other ships' sirens are its "mouths" will stand out, like eight-foot-long guns,' in all directions from the funnels. An electric switch will operate it. The note is A, two octaves below the middle octave on the piano, and although its mere whisper will carry so far, its mellow depth is such that the passengers on 534 itself will not be disturbed by it. Of all notes. this one was found by the acous- tic experts who have chosen it to be the ideal one for nerve comfort. It is expected that passengers will become, so attuned to it that they wil hardly hear the swelling wave of sound. Perfect "control" of its voice will be possible, and it will not always sing with the full ma- jesty of its three throats at once. Sometimes just a ten-mile "mur- mur" from one throat will be all that is necessary,
