SHIPPERS' PROBLEM

WITH RATS."

Shanghai, July 19." The problem of how to make a ship less hospitable to rats with-- out serious expense" has been under the consideration of a com-TANDA mittee appointed by the Chamber of Shipping of the United King- dom and the Liverpool Steam Ship Owners? Association

The committce, fh their report state that many British ships had been more or less rat-proofed with very successful results, but they had not attempted to deal with existing vessels,

Bat-proofing was much cheaper and more effectively done at the time the vessel was built, and while it would make some addition. to the cost, except in ships with a large amount of passenger accom- modation the extra cost should not be great.
