GERMAN LINERS

Increased Length

Of 21,000 Tonners

L

The decision of the Hamburg- American Line to increase the length of the four Transatlantic liners of the Albert Ballin' class raises interesting points of naval architecture. Each of the ships is about 802 ft, long, with a beam of 72 ft., and, as stated recently, the intention is to increase the length by about 38 ft.-not a great amount in proportion to the pre- sent total length.

Edinburgh.-Messrs. Henry Robb Ltd., Leith, have been fairly ac- five in recent weeks, haying laun- ched in the past fortnight the twin-screws steamer Janardine for service in East Bengal and the Diesel-electric tug Lectro for ser- vice on the Thames, while to-day they are launching the hopper dredger Lucayan for service Nassau, Bahamas.

FOUR SHIPS AFFECTED The four German ships are be- tween about 21,000 and 22.000 tons gross each. Two of them-the Al- bert Ballin and Deutschland were built in 1923, the Hamburg was built in 1928; and the New York in 1827. The vessels repre sented the policy which the Ham- burg-American Line followed after the War of building a fleet of ships of moderate size and speed and with considerable cargo- carrying capacity. · However much the liners may have experienced, like other ships, the effects of the trade depression of the last two or three years, they were believed for years at any rate to be very profitable vessels.

Next month the Leith firm withe launch the British Coast, which is the largest motor coaster built in the country. At the launch of the Lectro last week it was stated that Leith firm were to receive another order for a Diesel-electric tug.

Messrs. Henry Robb are also well off for repair work..........

FORTHCOMING CONTRACTS Clyde shipyards and engineering shops are dealing with a few in- quiries at present for new work and, among the orders which will probably be placed soon are one or two coasters; tugs, and other small craft. It is expected that an announcement will be made short- ly regarding the new ferries for the Clyde Navigation Trustees.

CLYDE SHIP REPAIRING Messrs. Alexander Stephen and Soris have had the yacht Iolaire for general overhaul to huli and engines, and during the week they Anilshed hull and machinery re- pairs on the Britannia and carri- ed out hull and machinery over- haul on the Magdapur and boller the Shuna Messrs, repairs on Stephen also had the Annan for small machinery repairs and the Masunda and the Mandasor for hull and machinery overhaul

D. and W. Henderson and Co. carried out voyage repairs on ve

vessels the Hatasu, the Tuscania. the the Lestris, the Rector, and Baron Forbes. Barclay, Curle and Co. had about 10 vessels for va- rious repairs, including the Kana and the Pegu, which were dry- docked at Elderslie Dockyard for overhauling.

RATING OF LINERS Some years ago the liners were held to justify reatting with new. engines for the purpose of attain- the ing higher speeds. Before ships were re-engined they made Trans-Atlantic crossing in about the nine days. Now they make the passage between the Channel ports and New York within eight days. The ships are really in a class by themselves. They carry passengers in the Arst class and in the tourist class second class in these vessels has been eliminated-whereas first class is commonly associated with what are Company spoken of a "monster" ships, which are faster.
