It was stated by Capt. Scobbie "BANORI that the men had been signed on in Singapore. The vessel was in New York harbour on June 13, and was to have sailed on the following day. For a week past cargo had been loaded on to the vessel, comprising shoes, shirts, cloth, soap, etc. for Manila. On the night of June 15 the Chief Officer brought the three accused to him, reporting that they had been caught stealing cargo. The men, when told of the charge against them, had admitted their guilt. The goods alleged to have been stolen were found near the quarters.
When the verse) arrived at Manila and the cargo was dis- charged, e claim totalling 87 pesos and 50 cents (about £7) for shortage of goods was made against them.
The Master. Attendant," remark- ing that pilferage was a very geri- lous offence both with regard to steamship and railway companies, passed sentence on the first two ac eused, who had pleaded guilty, as stated.
The case against the third accus-
