U.S. NAVAL RESERVE
Completes Half Century Of Service
A most important branch of the t. 9... Navy is the Naval Reserve. Its mission is to procure, organize and train the officers and men necessary in event of war for the operation and expansion of the U. S. Fleet and Naval Transporta- tion Service.,
It was born approximately nity years ago. New, York was the first state to join, in the early eighties, with Illinois, California and Mas- sachusetts coon following. Now, every state in the Union is repre sented, and its total enrollment. amounts to approximately 45,000 men. Besides providing regulation training for members, it makes this service, Congress created in Navigation, Engineering, Interna- tional Law, etc. Headquarters are maintained in each of the coun- try's Naval Districts.
In order to enlarge the scope of this srevice, Congress created in 1928 the Merchant Marine Naval Reserve. This was done to provide. a complement to adequate ships and trained men that would be immediately available for Nåvat service in case of national emer- gency.
1‛:,... According to the most recent ar nouncement, there are now 153 merchant ships and over 3,000 ships' officers enrolled in this ser vice. Most of the leading Ameri- can steamship liners are repre- | sented in the list."
