But you will realise gard long term outlook better than that we are still passing through 1939, when considerable earnings a most difficult time, and we are decline was indicated. also handicapped by having a more restricted market than formerly in which to dispose of our products.
During the past two years there has been an exceptionally heavy exodus from the country of all classes of the population, and as most of those who remain are com- pelled to curtail their spending
powar, the natural sequel is re- flected in these accounts. Under the circumstances your directors feel that the result of the com- pany's operations calls for little criticism, and they trust share holders will take the same view.
General Electric Co.
The foremost manufacturer of electrical equipment earned $1.33 a share, in 1931. as against $1.00 a share in 1830. Book value prer 812, and working capital over $8 per share at end of 1931. Company in best position in industry during depression due to good lamp busi-
large income, etc.
Norfolk and Western Railway Co.
Principal commodity carried is col. Highly efficient operation possible because of the excellent physical condition of the properties. Fixed assets show a decrease of Shares rank as desirable investment nearly 889,000 which is entirely acin view of the company's strong counted for by depreciation. Stocks, etores and sundry debtors are re- duced by more than $92,000 which indicates that these accounts have responded to diminished trade, while the cash position shows an improvement of over $200,000.
Standard Brands, Inc.
Made good earnings report for 1002, showing 81.14 per cœmmon have against #1.bé in 1991. Is strong financially, current ratio 9.21 to 1,cash and securities five times

Subsidiary Companies.
The Saigon branch of "Singa pore Soda" Framer and Neave Ltd. was, you may remember, disposed on advantageous terms last year, and this subsidiary company which now operates in Sumatra only, has declared a dividend. of $20,000.
When we met last year I ventur- ed the opinion that Frinters Limit ed, another subsidiary, had turned the corner, but I regret to say that the result of the past year still shows a loss which has been debit- ed to the profit and loss account of Fraser and Neave Ltd.
For some years the office appli ances section of Printera Ltd. gavoi a substantial return on the capi tal invested, but conditions have changed, profite have disappeared, and we have now thought it ad- visable to withdraw from this class if business. Liquidation of stocks has been in progress for some months and in anticipation of an ultimate loss, your directors have recommended the transfer of: $5,000 frem profit and loss to stock reserve.
Malayan Breweries Limited.
The accounts of this company, in which we have a substantial in- terest, have just been published, and show that a profit was earned from the beginning of trading operatione. The annual meeting will be held early next month.
The report and accounts were duly adopted.
A total of 8187,060.20 was avail. able for distribution and the meet ing confirmed the directors” JOCOM- menuation. Vat it mould be dealt'! with as follows: that a final divi. dend of 25 cents, per share on the ordinary shares, be paid absorbing, 200,000; that the sun of 85,000 he transferred to stock reserve; that the balance of $32,069.20 be parri ed forward to next year's ac counts.
