When he began work as a kitchen apprentice in the firm of J. Lyons and Company he carried in his heart the hope that he would one day be head of the businees. To- day he is chairman and managing director of LORE,

He holds that public duties need not conflict with business interesta; on the contrary, they widen the vision. Major Salmon has done great deal of public work, both in- side and outside Parliament.

In THE WEEK-END PROBLEMS BOOK Nonesuch Prest pp. ix. 310, 55.) Mr. Hubert Phillips has produced the boat unsociable anthology" yet published. The contents include time tests of intelligence,crOSS word puzzles, scrostics, anagrams, chess and card problems, together with forty of the famous Cali- ban" questions: solutions are given in an appendix, und almost the entire book is original, with the exception of the card and chess problems. The anthology is neces sarily described as "unsociable " because the intellectual tests (aro mostly severe and surmon the student to solitude, silence, and desperate concentration. However, a percentage of the questions lend themselves to mass attack; the time tests of intelligence, for example, are entirely suitable for an adult Christmas party, whilst the cross word, ohess, and contract bridge tests can be tackled by small part- nerships of two or three people. The book is a classic of its kind and is extremely good value for money, though the general excel- lence of its contents is balameed by some difficult typography.
