The fête and sale of work which has become an annual feature of the activities of the M.CL and Hong Kong Women's Guild, was held yes terday afternoon in the Volunteer Headquarters grounds, kindly lont for the occasion by Lieut.-Colonel |L. G.. Bird and Ollicora, ve
The afternoon was surprisingly hot and the gaily decked stulla jook ed very attractive on the bright sunshine. The sight of an array of "small" 'tablés: laïd for tea în "the Drill Hall, gave promise of a wol come rest in the cool, when the ardour of their offspring should have warned a little, to the many mothers who had brought smil children to enjoy the fun of the fair.
Lady Peel Present.
Lady Peel arrived at about. 4 p.m. and spent an hour at the fête, visiting ovory stall where she made many purchases, and looking Háðl the side shows. Not a very "large number of people were present, owing to the fact that there have been a good number of entertain ments of a similar kind recently, but the untiring efforts of the or ganisers and helpers ensued that every one who did go passed an amusing and interesting afternoon.
Delightful Memories,
The fite was on a smaller scale than in previous years, it having been decided by the organisers "to have a series of entertainmente of one sort and another instead. of putting all their energies into one show. Whether this was a wise de éision of not will be known" when the total takings of the year arc computed.
One wissed the band of enter-
prising and self sacrificing Joung men who played such havoc with our pockets when the fête was held in Lee Gardens. They were showmen, of showmen. Laughing, joking. cajoling, perspiring and untiring," they made us try, try again, for gold' fish, coconuta. cigarettes and prize porkers. They delighted the children with their ondices good humour, and the re sult was that all the visitors, young. or old, enjoyed themselves tremend ously, no one stopped to reckon how much they had spent--and a plen- did, sum was collected.
$1,636.00 Taken.

There: were men helpors Saturday, and Trojan work they did but it seemed that something of the fervour was missing. It may be that no one ever believes that the present is quite as good as a delightful memory, and certainly. the organisers should be pleased with the result. A sum of $1,630.00 was collected which was: very antia- factory in view of the fact that the fête was on a very much smaller scale thun that of three years ago in the Lee Gardens.
were well
The children enjoyed it all, and it is the children who matter. The many little stalls offered a bewildering variety of temptations, while the wishing well and the bran luba patronised. For older visitors there were the attractions of the humme scal, coconut shies and guessing competition. A marvel lous box of chocolates which was being raffled, tempted very one to take a 81 chance, while twin dolls in a bed, blso a dollar raffle, drew the covetous glances of every little girl in the grounds.
