PRESIDENT

Although railroad operations of the Coundian Pacific Railway this year have affected the substantial shrinkage in volume of tralie in the Dominion, recent reports would in- diente coverage of dividend require- ments ca outstanding shares of common stock. It is estimated that thoro are more than 10,000,000 shares of $23 par common stock at the regular 89.50 annual rate:

Revenue from special income is axpected to support the completo showing of the organization for the current year, Investments in other corporntions, steamship interests, telegraphs and hotel aliations all play a part in the report that will be issued. One project that has proved a paying investment to the Canadian Pacific Railway Company. is the Consolidated Mining & Smelt- ing Company of Canada. At the end of last year, its holdings aggre- anted 234,00 shares, on which a dividend of $12.50 a share was paid. All in all the total of 816,272,220 annased from special sources in 1920 is expected to be surpassed this

year.

Preliminary grass revenues for the month of Octobre show a smaller. proportionate declius from inat year thah was shown in the first ninc months, totalling $10,803,000, a drop of 15.8 per cent. from last year, while gross for the nine inonths to the end of September. totalled $132,032,150, a drop of 76 per egnt. from Inst year.

Operating results for August, which are the latest figures avail- able, are indicative of the redue- tion in expenses which has been effected. In that month grosɛ re- venues showed a drop of 82,200,920 below August, 1920; yet net earn- ings after taxes for the month alow.

·ed a gain of $338,377 over the pro- ceding year. This was accomplish- | ed by a reduction in the proportion of gross revenues spent en operat ing expenses to 27.4.per ecût., from 82.6 per cent, in August. 1920.

·Malatenanes of way ratio, was cut to 13.8 per cent. :

Increase of Not Earnings. Up to the end of May both gross revenues and net earnings from the railroad properties were subaton- tially behind last year. Beginning in June, however, a much better control of expenses, was evident; and in August and September this better control of expenses was trans- lated into an increase; in net earn- ings as compared with the corre sponding period of 1029 in epite of a decrease in gross revenues for those months.

The company reported net income of 841,477,781, after taxes and charges for 1929, equivalent alter preferred dividend requirements to $11,05 a share on 3,330,017 shares of 8100 par value common stock out standing at the end of the year: The common shares this year have been split-up on a four-for-one basis, through a'reduction in the par value to 825, from 8100. On the basis of tho approximately 13,300,000 shares now outstanding, last year's net income would be equal to $2.76 a share.

Canadian Pacific'r net earnings from railroad transportation in the nine months ended September 30 totalled $2,011,133, compared with 898,131,790 in the corresponding period last year. For the final three months n more favourable comparison is likely to be made as a result of the important reduction in operating expenses which has leep effected. Net in the Gnal quarter also should be benefitted by better comparison of gross with 1029 than was shown in the first nine months.-Financial Timer.
