An oriental or wild pearl is pro- dused when an irritant, entera ac- cidentally into the delicato tisauca of a mollust causing the oyster to socrete" "layers" of pearl-forming matter around it to ease the irrita tion20 *, « *¥ Cultured pearls are formed in exactly tho same manner · wild or oriental pearls, the only difference being the way in which the process is begun In case of wild pearls,the irritant, which forms the nucleus of the pearl, enters the oyster accidentally: in cultured pearls, it is placed thero intentionally by solentifie methods. From then on, the development of oriental and cultured pearls is exactly the same; and in both cases the oyster performs the work and produces the pearl.
