WEEKLY REPORT.

Since our last report of the 5th instant there is a distinetly better tone and more enquiry in the local

market, and although business-fas not been on a large scale, prices have in most instances marked an advance on the week. Investment stocks continue in good request and are readily saleable at quotations, but some of the speculative counters at the close have developed a slight ly easier tendency.

Banks-Hong Kong and Shang- hai Banks were booked in London at £110, but owing to the sepreity of shares offering locally the price has advanced to $1,523.

Marine and Fire Insurances.—An improvement is shown in Cantons and Hong Kong Fires which have buyers at 90 and 81,000 respective ly. Unions were realised again at $400 and more can be placed at this igure. China Fires continue in request at 8400. Underwriters have. receded to $2.65.

Shipping. There are enquiries for Douglas Steamships at 893). Hong Kong. Canton and Macao Steamboats are wanted at $234 and probably a little, more would be **Shell" Transports have paid.

Waterbonts slided back to 90/-. are obtainable at 826.

"Until the Government makes up its mind," he added, "to encourage British manufacturers by protecting them against foreign competition they cannot expect us to extend our business activities in this country."
