TRADE EXPEDITION TO SIBERIA.
FLOTILLA OF 50 VESSELS... Fifty vessels, a good number of which are Cardiff-owned steamers, have started upon an interesting trading adventure. Accompanied by powerful ice-breakers to clear the way in the ice-bound and little- known ports of the Kara Sen, the vessels will fight their way to Arctic ports on the Yenisei and Obi Rivers, to the ports of Ob, Obdorsk, and other far-removed Siberian trading centres.
On one of his own steamers
engaged in the expedition, which is the largest ever organised to these regions, is Mr. Frederick Jones, a Cardiff shipowner and councillor of the city of Cardiff.
The fifty vessels have left in convoys of six. The Cardiff vessels engaged have been chartered "for the round voyage. The flotilla of merchant ships is taking iron and steel and machinery for far-removed factories in Siberia towns, food stuffs, clothing, and other com- modities, and will bring back quan- tities of sawn and hewn timber and slepers, the bulk of which will be imported at London, Liverpool, Cardiff, and other ports in the Kingdom.
Commander James Figgins, late executive officer of the submarine depôt-ship Titania in China, took Training Commander at Devonport Naval Barracks in succession to Commander V. A. C. Crutchley, V.C., D.S.C.
