Almost every vessel arriving from Bangkok, Saigon and cther ports in that vicinity during the past few days have reported that the typhoon which swept over Bainan last week must have taken in its wake a heavy toll of life.

The latest report is that of Capt. A. N. Taylor of the ss. Chinhua. The master says that he left Hoi- how on the 18th inst. and while

passing through Hainan Straits, the picked up five men, the members of the crew of a junk that was wrecked three days previously.

The mazier added that on the Sunning, British str., 1,570 tons,

Capt. W. Shaw, from Canton,trip down, he encountered" heavy'
