STEEPLECHASE MEETING AT KWANTI. Mr. Reinshagen's Fanling Stag

AS YOU LIKE IT WINS FANLING GRAND NATIONAL

OUTSIDER PAYS ALMOST 50 TO 1.

[BY" MORNING DEW."]

The ideal weather yesterday attracted a larger crowd than usual to the steeplechase meeting at Kwanti. Although the pro- gramma consisted of only five raços, there was no lack of enthusiasm - on the part of punters. Favourites had a good day, but one out> sider, Sucre, who accounted for the third race, paid his supporters almost 50-1.

There were many well-known racing men at the course yester- day and. His Excellency the Officer Administering the Government (the Hon. Mr. W. T. Southorn) together with Mr. Southorn were noticed among the large gathering.

The Fanling Grand National and Pierce Grove Cup went to Mr. Brish whose representative, As You Like It, ran a very well- judged race. The March Cup, fell to Mr. Heard who won it with Christmas Frolic.

In asking Mrs. Shenton to present these cups, Mr. H. B. LL Dowbiggin, one of the stewards, expressed the hope that the Shenton" ponies would soon be seen flying over the sticks at Fanling as they have been. appropriately named for the purpose.

Mr. Bulteel was the most successful jockey of the day, start- ing three times and getting as many wins. Mr. Stanton won the last race, and had a second as well. Mr. Bramwell was respon- sible for the big dividend on Sucre.

By kind permission of Lieut-Colonel C. H. Little, D.8.0., and Officers, the military band of the 1st Battalion, the Somerset Light Infantry, under Mr. E. J. Woollcott, rendered a" pleasing selection of music during the afternoon.

THE RACING.

Shamrock Stakes.

Six candidates accepted for this race for ponies that have started twice this season at Kwangti and have not ON.

Sunloch and Fern Leaf were made favourites. The latter led all the way, closely followed by Sunloch.

On reaching the dip Fera Leaf was two lengths ahead of Sunloch, who was again three lengths ahead of Duke of Neiblung, with James Pigg next, Aristophanes next, and Siang River bringing up the rear.

Sunloch was still running second to Fern Leaf when the former's jockey, Mr. Worrall, was thrown about three hurdles from -home. Ferr Leaf then romped in to win comfortably.

The Duke of Neiblung took second place and Aristophanes was third, many lengths in arrears.

The March Cup,

Only six of the seventeen entries faced the starter in this race over the mile and a half.

Christmas Frolic was' a bot · fav. ourite, and he managed to win by half a length from November, who took a long lead early on and look ed na if he would run away from the others. About half a mile from home, Christmas Frolic began to reduce the gap between himself and the leader, and the last quarter mile saw a close race between these two, with the favourite just getting there by half a length.

Mowgli was third, many length behind. Cavaire was fourth and Strathlorne did not finish, after throwing Mr. Palmer after the first half mile.

The Spring Maidens,

A

The handicaps in this event were perhaps responsible for the small field which accepted for this long race 9 miles.

Blotting Paper led over the first mile, followed three lengths behind by Fauling Stag, As You Like It, and Huntington in a bunch.

Huntington dropped back slightly with three quarters of a mile to go, and Blotting Paper was tiring fast so that it appeared as it Fanling Stag and As You Like It were going to have it out between them. The latter won, but Huntington came up with a great burst at the end and displaced Fanling Stag for the second place.
