WHAT SEVERANCE OF ECONOMIC RELATIONS. WOULD MEAN.
VIEWS OF JAPANESE BUSINESS MAN,
Mr. Y. Yasukawa, -a well-known member of the commercial "com- munity of Japan, has given facts | and figures to show that an anti- Japanese boycott in China must react far more unfavourably on the Chinese themselves than upan the Japanese:
Afr. Yasukawa writes:-
Recent anti-Japanese movements, which are systematically controlled by a kind of professional agitator, have passed into a chronic state, and some of the Chinese people venture to propose the severance of economic relations between Japan and China.
Should complete breach be brought about, can it injure Japan as severely, as is expected it will do? My opinion is that it will not.
The statistical survey of Japan's foreign trade reveals the fact that her trade (including Korea and. Formosa) with China (not includ ing the Kwangtung Province) is only about per cent. and 13 per cent. of the respective totali of export and import of the whole foreign trade of Japan. On the other hand, Japan conspicuously heads the list of all the countries trading with China, more than 30 per cent of the whole trade of Chiza being with Japan. In view of these figures there is no doubt which of the two countries would be more seriously affected by the interruption of trade.
On the other hand, it is evident ROUND THE POLICE H.K.F.A. COUNCIL MEETING,
that China's home industries cap- bct, in present circumstances, furnish her with all her necessaries and she has to rely on the Occi dental countries for the supply of the greater part of these goods in the event of the breaking off the Sino-Japanese economic relations.- In that case China will have to pay for these commoditics.consider- ably higher prices than the pro ducts of Japan. The whole burden of the increased cost will have to be borne by the Chinese consumers
The list of imports from China to Japan during 1997 was under :-
