ENGLAND'S CANALS AS

MOTOR ROADWAYS.

An interesting suggestion for solving the road traffic problem is put forward in The Motor by Major Goronwy Owen, D.8.0., M.P. He writes: "I suggest that the time has come to drain the canals of their water, to lay foundations in their beds, and these foundations to build great roadways. which

MOTORCYCLE FIRE-FIGHTING

OUTFITS.

Several of the most enterprising British manufacturers of commer cial models of motorcycle outfits have foreseen the value of using suitably equipped examples of their products for "fire-fighting work, being aware of the fact that, on the score of readiness to respond to an urgent call, they have few, it any equals.

This factor of

speed, says The Commercial Motor, is paramount in all channels of re-brigade activity, and a few seconds saved in reaching a con- Bagration may mean the preven tion of many thousands of pounds of: damage.

It is not suggested that the small motorcycle fire-fighting outât is capable, of quelling a serious out- break or one of a special character, but the speed with which it can be brought into use provides a chançe of arresting the spread of an out- break or of protecting vulnerable property until such times as the more powerful unita have arrived on the scene.

It is really surprising the amount of equipment which can be includ- ed in a motorcycle outfit.of this kind,

It will be remembered that the Hong Kong Fire Brigade have a

It is to early at present to at tempt to forecast the principal changes in motorcycle design which will be announced during the next few weeks says Motor Cycling. It I possible, however, to say that the choice open to those who wish to buy 250 models will be consider- ably wider at Olympia than it is at the present time, whilst inex pensive machines are likely to gure of many more stands than last year. We expect to see & model that makes a special appeal to utility riders exhibited by near- ly all the principal makers, and wa Enticipate that the prices of these models will be well under £40. At the other end of the scale there is likely to be evidence of equal at tention op the part of the trado to the needs of its customers. Luxury mounts and sports models in 1920 will be better than they have ever been, the needs of sport ing riders and those who undertake ambitious rides being catered for on most progressive lines:

ENCOURAGING ROADSIDE

BALES.

In pointing out how country

roadside sales are encouraged by the increase in passenger transport by coach and bus, The Commercial Motor mys: Each new petrol- filling station in a country district must in time become a recognized place at which both neighbouring and visiting motorists will cali and, when calling, look round, stretch their legs and once at least in every so often buy more than petrol, Motor coaches bring multi- .tudes of potential shoppers. Flourishing inns and tea-rooms are often in close proximity thanks, no doubt, to à combination of con- veniences. It is upon the provision of still further conveniences and facilities that we feel many people in country districts can advisedly rely for new sources of revenue. We invite consideration for these matters and, not least amongst them, for the provision of a good draw-in Owners of petrol filling atations in country districts who have mare land available, or who can aquire it, may well in their own interests take a hand in estate development on a small scale, per- haps, in the first place. One shop hard by is better than none.

A TAXATION BUGGESTION.

Spaking at the Overseas Dinner, Major J. McEvan Martin urged Dealice Overseas to consider seriously the advantages of a tax on cars of £1 per horse-power for the formation of a Road Fund. He suggested that such a tax would ant only help their own country, but would, to some extent, bad the dice in favour of British ears. While there may conceivably be countries where this heavy annual tax might be justifiable, it must not. be forgotten that it has probably done more harm to the motor in- dustry in this country than any other factor of late years. -

Furthermore, we cannot overlook- the fact that the principle of tax. ing & man, who uses his car only oopasionally as much us pue who 100 the road every day, from whatever point of view we regard the matter, is grossly unfair.

Good progress is shown in the new programme of Morris produe tions. The least expensive type of motoring on four wheels-and by least expensive I, of course, mean efficiency combined with economy in the long run-is exemplified in the new Morris Minor. The Mor ris-Cowley cara with their increas ed prices have been given a greater measure of driving safety, as have also the Morris-Oxford models, the prices of which it has been found possible to reduce. A mechanical specification of the Morris Minor was given here last May. As it is a car which is causing widespread
