AN INTERESTING DEMONSTRATION.
The City of Pekin, which arrived
in port here on Monday (Boxing Day), is one of the first steamers in the Far East fitted with the new Wireless Auto-Alarm Apparatus. This device, recently perfected by the Marconi Company as an addi- tional aid to safety of life at sea, isamost-remarkable piccoal
apparatus.

The following account of it and also of a demonstration given on the City of Pekin while that vessel was at Singapore, appears in a Singapore Free Preas which has just come to hand :-
The use on board ship of an alarm for automatically responding to a special signal sent by ships in dis- tress is provided for in the Mer- chant Shipping (Wireless Tele- graphy) Rules, recently, issued by
the Board of Trade.
This important development in the use of wireless at sea is the result of experiments carried out by the Admiralty on behalf of the Board of Trade and the General Post Office with the object of deter mining the possibilities of an in- strument which would respond, to a special signal used as a forerunner of the distress (8.0.5.) call, and so make it unnecessary for ships to maintain continuous human watch.
The Marconi Company has de signed apparatus "which meets in every detail the requirements laid down in the rules just published. and the General Post Office bus given official notification that the Marconi Auto Alarm has satisfac tarily passed all the required tests and has been approved for fitting on board ship.

The American Shipping Board's report, fatakng the construction of ten high-speed liners, has been speedily followed by the White Star Company ordering Harland and Wolfs to build the largest and pro- bably the swiftest ship in the world, with a. length of nearly a thousand feet, exceeding the Majes tic, which is $38 feet. It will be driven by motor engines and the speed is likely to exceed the Mauretania's average of 283 knots, which held the Atlantic speed re- cord for twenty years.

In the wireless operating room on board the City of Pekin a small but interested gathering watched, fascinated, the little black box which appeared almost human in the response it made to the alarm signal sent out from the Sun Life tanker, Cape St. Agnes, in Keppel Harbour.
