SAFE AND SAFER!

THE NEW SHIP WIRELESS ALARM

AN INTERESTING DEMONSTRATION.

The City of Pekin, which arrived

in port here on Monday (Boxing Day), is one of the first steamers in the Far East fitted with the new Wireless Auto-Alarm Apparatus. This device, recently perfected by the Marconi Company as an addi- tional aid to safety of life at sea, isamost-remarkable piccoal

apparatus.

The following account of it and also of a demonstration given on the City of Pekin while that vessel was at Singapore, appears in a Singapore Free Preas which has just come to hand :-

The use on board ship of an alarm for automatically responding to a special signal sent by ships in dis- tress is provided for in the Mer- chant Shipping (Wireless Tele- graphy) Rules, recently, issued by

the Board of Trade.

This important development in the use of wireless at sea is the result of experiments carried out by the Admiralty on behalf of the Board of Trade and the General Post Office with the object of deter mining the possibilities of an in- strument which would respond, to a special signal used as a forerunner of the distress (8.0.5.) call, and so make it unnecessary for ships to maintain continuous human watch.

The Marconi Company has de signed apparatus "which meets in every detail the requirements laid down in the rules just published. and the General Post Office bus given official notification that the Marconi Auto Alarm has satisfac tarily passed all the required tests and has been approved for fitting on board ship.

White Star Project,

The White Star Line is also credited with having under con sideration the construction of a giant liner.

The Cunard Line holds the blue riband of the Atlantic for speed with the Mauretani (30,695 tons), which in 1910 crossed the Atlantic from Daunt's Rock, (off, the Irish coast) to Ambrose Channel (off New York) in 4 days 10 hours 41 minutes, giving an average speed

of 28.06 knots.

This leads to the possibility, that a distress call may be missed by a ship in close proximity to the one which is in need of assistancey while being picked up by other which are at a greater distance away, thus causing the unnecessary diversion of large ships, smaller ships in the same would be able to give assistance more expeditiously and more econo- mically if they received, the call

The Daily News forecasts a re vival of the contest for the Blue Riband of the Atlantic

The American Shipping Board's report, fatakng the construction of ten high-speed liners, has been speedily followed by the White Star Company ordering Harland and Wolfs to build the largest and pro- bably the swiftest ship in the world, with a. length of nearly a thousand feet, exceeding the Majes tic, which is $38 feet. It will be driven by motor engines and the speed is likely to exceed the Mauretania's average of 283 knots, which held the Atlantic speed re- cord for twenty years.

The Cunard Company is consider ing the construction of a Super- Mauretania to establish a further record in size and speed.

The North German Lloyd Com- pany hope to capture the speed liners record with their new Bremen and Europe which are now being built. Gemi

Object Of Auto Alarm. The object of the auto alarm is to ensure that the call shall be received by the smaller ships and that no wireless distress calls shall be missed by any chips owing to an operator being off duty, When an operatar is off duty, distress enlls are registered automatically by the ringing of a bell which recalls the operator to his instrument. It was found at the trials that the most suitable form of signal is that which consists of a series of four

The opera tor immediately resumes duty at the wireless office and receives the actual distress message which fol lows the alarm.

The Demonstration,

In the wireless operating room on board the City of Pekin a small but interested gathering watched, fascinated, the little black box which appeared almost human in the response it made to the alarm signal sent out from the Sun Life tanker, Cape St. Agnes, in Keppel Harbour.

The demonstration had been ar ranged by Mr. H. J. Tattersall, Superintendent of the Marconi In ternational Marine Communication Co., Singapore Branch.
