The Race Described.
Ideal conditions. favoured the Fevent and it was a perfect swim- |ming day. The thirty-one competitors | ming day. The thirty-one competi- tors jumped off from the Railway Pier at 2,33 p.m. and Norris at once drew away from the crowd. 'Pull- ford followed him, closely and, the rest, conscious of Norris' experience followed his course. Two excep- tions were Pte. Faulkner and Ger. Bowden who swam westwards. Fire minutes sufficed to show the great tange of speed among the competi tars and by then they had spread over a distance of a hundred yards. Norris was swimming strongly while Pullford and Faulkner were twenty yards behind. Gar. Bowden was fourth by about ten yards. A group was some sixty yards behind Gar. Bowden, while many strac- klers were seen in the rear. Norris increased his lend leaving Pallford some distance behind. Faulkner and Bowden, who used the breast stroke stuggled pluckily to the west- ward. Most of the stragglers used the breast stroke,
Norris reached mid-harbour after fourteen minutes and continued his course unchallenged Pullford and Faulkner although divided by a big distance were racing each other for second place. Norris reached the RA.S.C. ramber, first and a large, crowd deservedly applauded the winner. Pullford had in the meantime been carried away by the current and Faulkner taking a good course dis- placed him-for-the-second place being fifty yards ahead. The fourth man. Gor. Bowden, came in not long after and then Pullford and there came in quick succession, Stragglers, however, were slow in
