Yesterday was Independence Day, and all warships in harbour were dressed in honour of the occasion. There were two Dollar and Ameri- can Mail Line vessels in port, the President Jefferson, en route for the States, and the President Van Buren on her way to Europe and

Defendant pleaded no re- collection of the incidents, but was convicted and fined $5 on each of the two charges, boing also ordered to pay $3 compensation to the bus company and 81 to the ricksha

The s.s. President Grant did not arrived in port until late last even-MOREA" ing from the States and the North,KHYBER” and is due to sail for Manila this evening at six o'clock. No details as to passengers and freight were available yesterday.

Chapel Island Light, The Shanghai Maritime Customs in a notice dated June 25th states that the Chupei Island Light is about to be dismantled and re- placed by a new and more powerful first-order light, and that during the period of replacement, a tem- porary light will be exhibited from the halomy of the existing tower.

The temporary light will be ex- hibited on or about July 7th and will consist of a sixth order acety lee flashing light, giving a flash of 0.3 seconds; duration every 3 seconds.

This light will be exhibited from the hand rail on the east side of the tower balcony and will be visible about ten nautical miles. It will in clear weather for a distance of be invisible on the landward side through an are of about 90 deg.

Chinese Deck Passengers, The total number of Chinese deck passengers entering the Colony during the 24 hours ended at 9 a yesterday was 32.

Petroleum Shipments. The returns yesterday showed an unusually heavy import of petroleum into the Colony, The British schooner Tabacher brought 8,000 tons of bunker oil from San Pedro, and the American vessel Volunteer discharged $0,000-cases- of oil and 600 bags of wax here. She came from New Orleans and Shanghai.
