DISCOVERY,
From a ton of coal a Manchester engineer, who is at present working a commercial basis bis plant on near Ginggow, claims to produce 14cwt. of smokeless fuel and 29 gallons of pitch-free oil,
He is Mr. Charles Turner, and his retort, which daily for the past three montha has had ten tons of conl put through it, was made avail- ablo carly in April for inspection by industrial, scientific, and Press re presentatives, together, with an inspetor of the Fuel Research Board.
The daily produels from his sigler of Turner enim are 200 gallons of crude oil, at 9d. per gallon, which can be Lurned into noter spirit, lubricat ing oil, etc., besides seven tons of smokeless fuel, in grades fetching from 208. to 35s. a tou

His plant treats the raw coal by immersion in super-heated stenni, and a company has been established in Glasgow to exploit the system.
The smokeless fuel, which it is claimed gives 30 per cent. greater heat than ordinary coal in a domes tic fireplace, ignites easily.
