LIVING FROM HAND TO MOUTH
THE VICE-CHANCELLOR · AND
OLD WOMAN BOUND AND
THE
HOME,
ALLURING PRIZES OF COMMERCE.”
The Hong Kong University opened its Best 'session in October, - 1013, but this year is the first occasion on which an annual report
· has been published. Mr. W. W, Hornell, the Vice-Chancellor, is to be congratulated upon the enterprise. It is useless to expect the public to maintain sustained interest in any institution about the working of which it knows little or nothing.
The mumber of students on the rolls on December 31st, 1920, was 253, of which 122 were in the Faculty of Medicine. 49 in the Faculty of Engineering and 109 in the Faculty of Arts. The number of women students during 1948 was 21: of these, nine were in the Arts, one it the Engineering, and eleven in the Medical Faculty. The majority of the students were from local schoola-others came from Canton, Shanghai, Harbin, Japan, India, Java, the Straits Settlements and the Federal Malay States.
The report emphasises the fact that the University has always had to live from hand to mouth. Referring to the difficulties of ob taining professors and teachers from Home," the Vice-Chancellor says "A University like Hong Kong, being poor, cannot offer good conditions of work or prospects; nor is a University appointment here likely to lead to a better University appointment elsewhere. If young man must leave Britain for the Far East, The prefers commerce with its alluring prizes."'
The alluring prizes of commerce is a beautifully sounding phrase which is likely to appeal to local business circles after the recurd of the past two years,
GAGGED,
One of the three men responsible for the robbery at No. 8. Star Street, Wanchai, on April 6th, wis stated to be a steeplejack, for it was he who climbed the water pipë running vertically from the ground to the verandah of the house after the manner of "cat" burglars in England. Once inside the bal cony, the man got into the house through the fend light, opened 'tife door and admitted his accomplices.
Two of them were subsequently arrested and charged before Mr... E. Lindsell, as the Central Magis tracy yesterday, with armed robbery. Three sinister looking knives, cols of wires and a few pieces of sweet potatoes were produced in Court by Sergt. Rozeskwy, who was pre- sécuting,
According to the complainant, a Chiness woman, the inmates of the house consisted of an old woman a girl and herself the master of the house being abroad. The complain- aut was awakened by someone.grip- ping hold of her threat. It was then about 3 m. She opened her eyes and saw three men bendiag over her. She shouted out save Life" and was told to keep quiet or she would be stabbed. Two of the robbers bound her with wires and thrust a piece of sweet potatoe into her mouth. A wire was then from coming out. The thieves then tied icrons to prevent the potatoe ransacked the whole house and made away with a good haul of two diamond rings 6 pairs of rattan gold mounted bangles; 7 gold hat ornaments, 6 children's gold gold er pick and $15 in cash. rings, hair press, 10 pearls, They also stole few pieces of cloth- ing They went into the rest cubicle occupied by the old woman and the girl. The latter was "so scared that she pulled the quilt all over her, and the robbers thinking that she was only a child left her
The University, says the report, becoming more and more built over has maintained a uniformly high and congested. This hardship į affects most students during the first year and some students during a much longer period.

Out of the excess income for the year, it was necessary to make a further provision of 813,316.55 for doubtful debts, leaving B153.76 to be added to the surplus brought

The man had lived in London for six years. He had never been in the hands of the police before.
