The Hong Kong University opened its Best 'session in October, - 1013, but this year is the first occasion on which an annual report
· has been published. Mr. W. W, Hornell, the Vice-Chancellor, is to be congratulated upon the enterprise. It is useless to expect the public to maintain sustained interest in any institution about the working of which it knows little or nothing.
The mumber of students on the rolls on December 31st, 1920, was 253, of which 122 were in the Faculty of Medicine. 49 in the Faculty of Engineering and 109 in the Faculty of Arts. The number of women students during 1948 was 21: of these, nine were in the Arts, one it the Engineering, and eleven in the Medical Faculty. The majority of the students were from local schoola-others came from Canton, Shanghai, Harbin, Japan, India, Java, the Straits Settlements and the Federal Malay States.
The report emphasises the fact that the University has always had to live from hand to mouth. Referring to the difficulties of ob taining professors and teachers from Home," the Vice-Chancellor says "A University like Hong Kong, being poor, cannot offer good conditions of work or prospects; nor is a University appointment here likely to lead to a better University appointment elsewhere. If young man must leave Britain for the Far East, The prefers commerce with its alluring prizes."'
