YESTERDAY'S FREIGHT

RETURNS,

LOCAL AND THROUGH CARGOES FAIR

HEAVY COAL SHIPMENT.

The returns for the 4 hours onded at 9 a.m. yesterday showed that over 50 per cent of the general merchandise entered into the Colony was carried by British steamers.

The total amount of general cargo imported

was 12,707 tons. Of these, 8,091 tons were discharged from four British vessels. The two best returns were shown by the 8.3. Arafura (British) from Melbourne and Manila. She brought 4,233 tona. The Chinese vessel Ta Chung, from Jesselton accounted for 100

tous.

The Charles Hardouin was not allowed to leave intil she had paid 820,000 as security to the owners of the junks. So far as can be na certained there were no lives lost but both junks were sunk and the rice cargo lost.

A stowaway.

A Chinese who managed to cop. cent himself in the coal bunker of the sa Tilaud when she was &t Singapore, was discovered the day after the steamer left that port. On arrival here, the stowaway was handed to the Police and was brought before Mr. W. Schofield, at the Kowloon Magistracy yesterday morning.

Defendant pleaded guilty and was fined $75, with the alternative of six weeks hard labour.
