"All-Night Negotiations.

But the fact that this cheque commemo- rates is that about three months before the war this sum -was regarded as the record transfer fee for a player, but have renson to know that Blackburn Rovers' paid £2,600 for Percy Dawsen, the centre-forward of the Heart of Mid- lothian, after a discussion which lasted from dark to daylight.

Instead of fees for players becoming less, they have been magnified and not long ago, it was stated that Partick Thistle had demanded .£10,000 for the release of Gibson, a half-back either on the right fank or in the centre, from Everton.

The report was sodo officially denied. and it was stated that the transfer of Gibson had never been considered by the board of directors of Partick Thistle, but it was admitted that some director might have jokingly said that it would take

10,000 to shift Gibson."

(1

Should be the Best in the World!

Of course, this son of old Neil Gibson, the international half-back of long ago, is said to be a very good player. At the price he ought to be; in fact, he ought to be the best in the world.

1 have heard from a source that I can- not doubt that Newcastle United had hopes of getting this player because he has a brother with the Tyneside club. Then McMullan, the international left half-back, is a great friend of, the Partick celebrity Now McMullan is with Man- chester City, who had, or have an ambition to land this big fish.

But Everton and Arsenal have had this young Scot under review, I am told by Glasgow friends that both clubs have visited Glasgow in search of the

man.

1

To all inquiries Partick Thistle have announced their intention of retaining the player until the end of this season- at least.

We shall see, for the Thistle directors, like others, are only human and the temptation of a handsome cheque is difficult to withstand. Moreover, the player has to be remembered, for he would receive considerable percentage of the fee. He may long for such a wind fall and become discontented if the

opportunity be denied him.

port was not correct.

Of course, the general public will say that no footballer is worth £10,000. Probably not, but it is necessary to re- member that the deciding factor is the value of the man to the club which needs him, for his assistance might prevent re legation which would not be dear to a elab like Everton at £30,000.

Since the war some clubs have spent from £12,000 to £18,000 to secure men who have prevented them from danger of

descent to the Second Division. Each, however, obtained the services of several players, and that is quite a different proposition.

It is well to realise that money is not all-powerful in football. If Everton did pay £10,000 for any player their sole justification. would be that for the preservation of the club in the First Division no money, honestly laid out,

would be either a waste or a sacrifice.

It must be smembered that the transfer system is part of an artificial scheme of spectaenlar sport, and that where only English clubs are concerned the money paid merely changes hands and comes back into the game. Nor should it be overlooked that no player can be transferred against his will, nad that he has a direct interest in the value put upon his services Professionals as whole oppose the abolition of an ex- change for a consideration.
