PARIS. September, s The length of the waistline these days is one of the moot points of fashion. First of all the mode generalisation, from such authorities se Patou is: "No waist- Mr. Benjamin line."
This is true in a great many Mr D. Berthan cases but, naturally, some gowns have tor H. Bickerton show something of a waistline since tunicam R. J. Birbeek are almost as much of a rule as sheath Mr C. W Bishop gowns. The tunic is usually mounted at Mr & Mrs G.G. the hip level but even here there is n Brooke and family great deal of difference. Some tunics Mr A, Brooks take their beginning at the level of the Mr A. Brostet hip bones, some at the widest part of the Mr & Mr, C. B. hips and others solve the problem by
Brooke striking a medium between these two Mr' A. W, Graham paints. Dresses of a sporting nature
their waistlines marked Mr A. C. Burlin usually bave higher than the purely decorative gowns. Mr. Conithar For these last there is waistline which Mr J. H. Cratch expresses the hesitations of the modo: Hrs D. R. Davies The sliding waistline. Generally it slopes Mr Max Deract down toward the hack, beginning at Capt. Dickens about the hip level in front and slanting Mr P. Dingle down at an angle of forty-five degrees or Mr M. Ditishier
Mr J.Donelane more. Another hesitating waistline ap pears in some sporta frocks which have a Mr & Mrs W. A.R. belt that suddenly drops at the sides and places a pair of pendant pockets low on the hips. Separate belts applied to frock are almost non-existant, though there are a few wide belts of suede or kid which make a decorative 65ish for sports ar morning frocks. These are only for the very slender, of course. Let the others attempt them at their peril!
Another generality of the mode which bas, however, its exception, is the aar raw sleeve. The close arushole, excellent Jy fitting, and the sleeve that follows the form of the art closely from shoulder to wrist, and even prolongs itself onto the hand in suggestion of the mitten, is Mr H Hancock the..vule. But there are exceptions to Mr & Mrs H. A prove it! Poiret presents one gown this season with sleeves which, from the elbow Mr & Mrs W. Harris
Mr J. Scott Haraton down, are widely circular. As the material is a soft crêpe satin the effect is mestr E. Hansermann graceful. Some of the Empire, coats have air. J. van Eycke rather large, loose sleeves, quite straight Mr A. E in form like a man's coat sleeves and Mr E. Hrnry, with a cuff that fares away from the hand Mr. Holmes

Johnstone and the top of the arm, as well as at Sir & Lady Edgar the wrist, but they grow larger toward the elbow, thus achieving an almost seini- circular form, or the form of a long water mellon cut in quarter length-bence the Dame. With these siceves the "cavalier" cuffs which are backward from the hand often appear, but the sleeves do nos ini. ply the cutts nay more than the cuffs imply the sleeves, for these smart wrist Enishings are often used with the long narrow sleeve and have the great advan tage of making the hand emerging from them seem smaller. They are also very quaint and distinctive in their style.

In fact, the majority of evening gowns worn at Deauville and Biarritz are white, sometimes enriched with colour embroidery, sometimes em- broidered with pearl or crystal beads.
INTERESTING CHANGES.
One of the most interesting things about the new styles is the way that the eir cular cutting has been modified, and tamed, so to speak, in this season's gowns. The very full circular skirts and tunics have almost disappeared, but a sligh circular movement appears in many of the attached tunica and tunic blouses. These flare discrectly toward the hem of the frock, which usually has a narrow skirt beneath the circular tunic, so that above the ankles a narrow skirt will show then above this the narrow bell of the tunic, which goes on diminishing in size to the hips, above which the bodice always appears to be quite narrow and straight, or even a little fitted in to follow the curve of the back Circular tanics attach- ed to the skirt are seldom full enough to. form marked godets in. falling, though (Continued on next column.)
to the home dressmaker for whom the trials of atting and draping hold horrora.
"
One of the amusing fashions in women's dress is an adaptation of the "plastron or man's shirt front as a decorative fea- ture in woman's frocks. During this
# whole season a great many frocks bave. featured the plastron, either in white or. in a colour contrasting with the body of the frock. A simple chemise dress inde in this way has a great deal of character, with the utmost simplicity of line. The plastron front is simply attached to the dress, either underneath, in the form of a dickey which is firmly basted in place, or as an applique. The fact of being easy to remove is one of the chief points of the plaatron, as it is usually of a light colour and often needs to be cleaned more frequently than the frock it accom panies. The plastron is often quite deep, reaching to the waist level, while the frock will have a narrow belt about the hips, and it usually takes up at least half the width of the dress front, contred, of course, in the middle. Smaller plastrons often verge on the form of the jabot, and sometimes even have frills of lace edging
