CHEAP FUBLIC COURSES.
Mr. R. Endersby Howard writing in the Daily Mail mays:—
The United States Golf Association has been collecting information concern. ing the extent to which the game is play-
in the United States, and Mr. Corn lius S. Lee, the secretary, bas sent me the
figures.
In their magnitude they offer, perhaps, a simple explanation as to why it is that America is now constantly producing golfers who are capable of beating the best in this country. There are enor mous resources" from which to develop talent.
The official statistics show that over 2,000,000 people in the United States play golf. Last year their expenditure in club subscriptions, green fees, halls, implements, and caddies was 217,000,000 dollars, or about £60,000,000. In that period £20,000,000 was spent in the con- struction of new courtes and clubs.
The U.S.G.A. has a department called the Public and Municipal Golf Courses Committee. which devotes itself to the promotion of golf at cheap rates for the masses, and it has issued a special act of statistics concerning public course,
Of these, there are now over 100 in the United States. Chicago alone has. 28, al. hut 6 of them consisting of 18 holes. At several, the number of rounds played in (Continued on next Column.)
This development is one of the big faċ- tors in the rise of the game in America. Some of the most famous amateurs there as well as professionals are former caddies who have developed their golf on public greens.
