SAVING THE SEA-SICK. THE ONE SURE REMEDY..

JUY A SHIP'R. DOCTOR 1 Avoiding sea-sickness is an art of which few bad sailors know the rudimenta-if the number of sea-sick persons on such short voyages as cross-Channel trips is any criterion.

Science knows only one sure remedy against it-oxygen. There are various remedies which claim to give immunity, but they are uncertain in action. Some times they act, sometimes they don't; and what is effective with one person is non- effective with another.

A whiff of oxygen stimulates the entire nervous systems. That is why it banishes sea sickness. For seasickness is a nervous, not a stomatic affliction. It originates in the ear-deaf mates are Bever sick.

In the inner ear are the semi-circalar canals containing the hair-like ends of the auditory nerve. These auditory-nerve terminals float in fluid, and the vibration of the waves sets up a motion in the fluid which irritates the nerve and extends to other nerve centres. "It is the disturbance caused in the great nerve centre, the solar plexus, in the region of the stomach, which produces pausea. All the disagree- able symptoms-beadache, loss of colour, chilliness, prickly sensations, perspira tions. quickened pulse-are nervous symptoms."

Some people are more easily affected than others. A whiff or two of oxygen would put them right in a trice, but as even luxury liners do not carry cylinders 6f the exhilarating gas for the allevia- tion of mal de mer, some commonplace precautions may be observed to lessen the chance of being overcome.

Reserve your strength. Don't arrive on overwrought. ship-board fatigued or Don't tramp the deck or jenn over the side. Don't figit or fuas. Recline at ease in a chair on "deck, amidships or on the leeward side, close the eyes, relax the body, and don't talk or allow anybody to talk to you or fuss you

No particular kind of food prevents seasickness, But certain rules of diet strengthen the resistance of the bad sailor Avoid too much liquid food. Eat small meals, but don't starve or allow the stomach to remain empty,

If on board for several days take things easily. Breakfast immediately on rising, or, if that is impossible, have some fruit or light food by the bed and eat before getting up. Take coffee and tea quite hot-very hot tea or coffee will often sooth easick person.

Alcohol is not much good. But a little ice-cold champagne is an exception. It is a quickly diffused stimulent and is the next best thing to a whiff of oxygen.

It is, of course, unicas to advise the had sailor not to worry over the prospect But it is important to of an attack. know that fear of sea-sickness increases the symptoms. It is a good thing if the verage is long enough to go to bed before the ship starts and avoid exertion until accustomed to the ship's motion. The

best possible position is to lie quite fat with a low pillow, and if symptoms begin dispense with the pillow and let the head lie Sht
