THE
DECAY OF LAUGHTER.
MAN TENDING TOWARDS AGE OF SOBRIETY.
So little genuine laughter is left in the world how that we already are forged to resort to the synthetic smiles of comic artists and vaudeville joke-smiths, and the time is approaching when there will not be a laugh left in the entire world, according to Dr. Charles Gray Shaw, pro- fessor of philosophy at New York Univer- sity, who made his gloomy forecast for a summer school audience at the university.
Man may be defined as a creature of laughter and tears," Dr. Shaw said. "1 pacificism, socialism, and the like are seeking to efface all tears, it may happen that certain other causes will work for the destruction of laughter. Primitive men did not know enough to laugh, since wit involves a certain nouat of intelligence. The men of the future will know too much to laugh
anything.
Men are tending toward an age ut sobriety in which laughter will have no real place. In the sober period of selen- tific and social thought there may be museums which will preserve our jokes in the way we keep the memorials of the stone age. The case will be labelled
The Age of Laughter.*
"Laughter arises from the twin causes of incongruity and inequality. The laugh is at once of physical and social origin. We laugh at what we do not, understand or at what seems inferior to us. In bei cases our pride induces us to assume an exalted position and lofty air.
Men used to laugh at Columbus and Galileo: how they try to joke about Einstein noui Freud. But the supply of good laughs is becoming less and less as ruan grows more and more wine...
Those who are se advanced as to see their way through all incongruities and inequalities.never stop to laugh at any

Norway has just celebrated the aine hundredth anniversary of the introduc tion of Christianity to the country. The memorial service took place in a small church at Moster, on the west coast, near Bergen. The church (which, according to from money-lenders. tradition, is identical with one which King Olav Trygvason built in 095) was er tainly in use in 1024.. when the King, Saint Olave, imposed Christianity on the country.
