WORLD OUTPUT OF SHIPS.
CONTINUED DEPRESSION.
GERMANY TAKES THE SECAY
PLACE.
Thn clouds of depression still hung over the British shipbuilding industry, This guuchtion is pretty great all the world over, as Loyal's Register of shipbuilding retirus for the quarter endest June 30th show. This Unite States, Italy, France, and Japan, are suffering in their shipmild- ing even more than Great Britain is am infeed, ja America the whole ship
ilding effort which the war brought has long sie spent itself, and its production of new ships is quita a minor matter,
1a Germany alone, of foreign countries dues, there seem to ba any upward moves menit in the construction of new vessels. The figures farnished to Lloyd's Registor do not show the new toutage laid down in the last quarter in regard to Germany, but the tounage af launches
the last quarter 118,292 tons groos of new Vessels were launched in Germany, and 41,170 tons graso Danzig. In the same period only 9,373 tous were latchout from British yards, and Germany: is thus stepping into a second place again as re- gards the output of ships.
The returns also show that 241,283 tons Igrass of new vessels were laid down in British yards during the quarter, and that quantity for all practical balances the amount of lawchings.
SUSPENDED WORK.
purposes
The memorandum attached to Lloyd's Register shipbuilding returns deals with the situation as follows:
The Returns show a decrease of about 13-1,000 tons, as compared with this pro- vious quarter, in the tonnage under con struction in Great Britain and Ireland, viz.: 1,337.739 tons; and the decrease, as compared with twelve months ago, renches about 382,000 taus. Th
us The total includes 130,000 tons on which work has been sus- pended for some time. Deducting this amount in order to enable a"" comparison to be made with figures for normal times, the tonnage actually under construction ja Great Britain and Ireland now amounts to 1,208,000 tons, The average towingo under construction during the twelvo month immediately preceding the war was 1.800,000 tons, fr., 682,000 tons mor than the present figures..
As compared with the figure for the quarter ended March 31st, 1923, there has been a slight increase in the tonnage launched, but a coliderable decrease in the tonnage cominenced in Great Britain and Ireland during the past quarter, tho latter tonnage only amounting to 16' par cent of the work in hand at the begin- ing of the quarter. The total merchants tonninge building in other countries is 1,206,007 tons, but this includes about 132,000 tons upon, which work has been suspended, leaving about 1,074,000 tons atually under construction; the lattor "figure is 140,000 tons less than at the end.

The ton- nagé cumigence in the world during the same period amounted to 314,375 tous, of which 241,283 tons were commenced in Great Britain and Ireland; these totale, however, do not include vessels commerce.t in Germany during the
such in- quarter formation it being yet available,
The total world tonnage under construc- tion 2,543.836 tong-includes 282,000 tons (of which 130,000 tons are in Great Britain!· and Ireland) on which work is suspended.
