SIGNS OF IMPROVEMENT.

Shipments to Europe having increased, the Nippon Yasen Kaisha has decided to lispatch an extr steamer, The Kokonai Kisen Kaisha is also arranging to place large-size ships on the European run. The improvement, says the Japan Avery river, is not due so much to an actual increase in international tende as to an abnormal condition of tonnage disposi tien.

As freight ratos have greatly fallen- owing to the long continued depression, some vessels have withdrawn from the

various services, while the P. & D. Co

the Blue Fannell and the Messa- tained services to this country, hava shortened their lines to Shanghai or the Straits Settlements. This has caused a temporary shortage in available tonnage. from Dairen, same oil from Shangbai. On the other hand, shipments of wheat

copra from Singapore and of other articles from the Orient have somewhat increased. As a miatter of fact, the wheat rate from Dairen to Europe, which stood at 33 shillings some time ago, is now quoted at 50 shillings. The Shang- hai rate is also 30 shillings, but there is a proposal to raise it, owing to the in- | crease, in shipments,

At present all the regular liners of that Nippon Yusen Kaisha are carrying capa city cargo on the outward voyage, and in order to increase freight accommoda. tion, the company is dispatching the Tsuyam in a few days as an extra stormer to Europe Oa the return voy age, the freight situation in Englund is not bright, owing to labour trouble, but the financial siuation in Germany is re ported to have songwhat improved, and N.Y.E. vessels are carrying chipbuilding materials for the navy and articles due to Japan in reparation besides general carro.

The American run is depressed, but silk ned the situation is better than there are appreciable shipments of raw month or two ago. Shipments of tes this your are expected to show a decrease, the estimates being.2,000 tons, as against 3,500 from America there is a grenter increase tons for last year. On the return voyage in shipments: especially in timber. similar state of affairs is the case with the Australian trade, Shipments from Japan, are eluck, principally owing to fiancial depression in Australia, but there are pretty good shipments of wool, tallow, and some other articles.

...

Thus the freight situation from the viewpoint of Japanese shipping is some what better than a few months ago, bat it is doubted whether it may be taken as any particular restoration of netfrity.in a real improvement, as it is not dua to

snmably temporary shortage of tonnage.. international trade but to a local and pre-
